Q1: What is the Radeon™ 7500 graphic card and what chipset does it use?
 
A1: Radeon™ 7500 (Radeon™ 7500 64MB DDR) is ATI's high performance graphic solution addressing a wide range of home and business graphic needs. Radeon™ 7500 graphic cards are powered by the Radeon™ 7500 GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). The Radeon™ 7500 GPU is able to perform the complex and demanding T&L (transform and lighting) calculations that are required by the latest 3D games and applications. To address the wide range of needs that are demanded by the consumer, the Radeon™ 7500 graphic card also supports dual display, TV output and can drive a digital flat panel monitor (DVI-I).


 
Q2: What connectors are available on the Radeon™ 7500?

The Radeon™ 7500 graphic cards will support the following 3 connectors:
  1. VGA - for driving a standard CRT (Analog) monitor
  2. DVI-I - which drives a DVI-I based digital flat panel monitor
    • a DVI-I to VGA adapter will allow you to attach 2 CRT monitors simultaneously. DVI-I to VGA adapter not included in the box. (available to order via the ATI Online store.)
  3. TV-Out - an s-video connector which can be connected to a television or VCR
    • AGP Version: An s-video to composite adapter is also supplied and will allow you to attach via composite connection if your television does not support s-video
    • PCI Version: Composite output supported


Q3: When will the Radeon™ 7500 boards be shipping? What is the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of this product?
 
A3: The Radeon™ 7500 began shipping September 24, 2001. The SRP for the Radeon™ 7500 will be $79.00 U.S. ($129 Canadian).


 
Q4: Can the Radeon™ 7500 graphic card support more than one display at the same time?
 
A4: Yes. Radeon™ 7500 will allow you to combine many different displays together simultaneously. The possible display configurations are shown in the table below:

Q5: What are the benefits of attaching two different displays to the Radeon™ 7500 at the same time?
 
A5: Attaching two displays to the Radeon™ 7500 will offer you the ability to extend your desktop. The extended desktop mode is available with the Windows® 98, Windows® 98 SE, Windows® Me, Windows® NT 4.0, Windows® 2000 and Windows® XP (when available) operating systems. In doing so you can increase your productivity by having different applications on different displays or even span an application (i.e., spreadsheet) across both displays. In effect you will receive twice the display area resulting in increased efficiency and flexibility. Hydravision™ Multiple Monitor Management Software makes using multiple displays easy and further increases your productivity by adding features such as hot keys, multiple desktops and a Desktop Management pop-up menu.


 
Q6: Can you run different resolutions and refresh rates with two different displays attached simultaneously?
 
A6: Windows® 98, Windows® 98 SE, Windows® Me and Windows® XP (when available) will support independent resolutions and refresh rates on both displays in extended desktop mode. Windows NT 4.0 and Windows® 2000 will support independent refresh rates however, it will not support independent resolutions. The Windows® NT 4.0 and Windows® 2000 operating systems initiate what is known as Big Desktop Mode when two displays are attached and will see the two displays as one single desktop.


 
Q7: What 3D features does the Radeon™ 7500 support?
 
A7: Charisma Engine
This Transform and Lighting engine has the power to accelerate the latest 3D games. In addition, it supports DirectX8 features such as 4-Matrix Vertex Skinning and Keyframe Interpolation that bring 3D characters to life. The Charisma Engine™ provides hardware acceleration that will increase performance and is optimized to support the high number of lights and polygons found in the complex scenes of the latest 3D games.

Pixel Tapestry™ ARCHITECTURE
This rendering engine supports the latest 3D texturing features:
  • Environment Mapped Bump Mapping (EMBM)
  • Dot Product 3 Bump Mapping
  • 3D Textures
  • Cubic Environment Mapping
  • Dual Paraboloid Environment Mapping
  • Shadow Mapping

Furthermore, the Pixel Tapestry™ ARCHITECTURE supports the ability to apply 3 textures to a pixel in a single clock cycle. More complex 3D scenes that contain a higher element of realism usually demand that more textures be applied to the scene. The Radeon™ 7500 is prepared to meet the texturing demands of the latest 3D games and applications.


 
Q8: What is the benefit of 64MB of memory over 32MB of memory?
 
A8: Although 32MB of local graphics memory is enough for most games and applications, the 64MB of memory allows for the most demanding games and applications to be run at high resolutions and color depth (32-bit true color). As well, you will still have enough local memory for the storing of textures.


 
Q9: What is DDR memory and how is it different from SDR memory?
 
A9: DDR (Double Data Rate) SDRAM provides an effective double memory bandwidth over SDR (Single Data Rate) SDRAM.


 
Q10: Do the Radeon™ 7500 AGP Version graphic boards support AGP4X?
 
A10: Yes, Radeon™ 7500 offers full AGP 4X implementation for 1GB/sec data transfer rate, sideband addressing, pipelining and AGP texturing support. AGP 2X operation is also supported for systems / motherboards which do not offer 4X compatibility. The PCI Version is exclusively compatible with a PCI slot.


 
Q11: What is the DAC speed?
 
A11: There are actually two integrated DAC (digital to analog converters) on the Radeon™ 7500. The frequency of both of these DAC is 350MHz. This hardware enables the driving of two independent displays.


 
Q12: Is there a PCI version of Radeon™ 7500?
 
A12: Yes. The PCI Version began shipping in September 2002.


 
Q13: Can the on-board memory be upgraded?
 
A13: No. Radeon™ 7500 graphic cards are not memory upgradeable.


 
Q14: What operating systems do Radeon™ 7500 graphic cards support?
 
A14: Radeon™ 7500 graphic cards currently support Windows® 98, Windows® 98 SE, Windows® Me, Windows® NT 4.0, Windows® 2000 and Windows XP (when available).


 
Q15: Does ATI develop drivers for alternate operating systems such as LINUX?
 
A15: Although ATI does not develop drivers for alternate operating systems in-house, drivers are available from 3rd party developers for the majority of ATI products. ATI actively supports these developers.

Q16: Are these products PC 99 and PC 01 compliant?
 
A16: Yes. All Radeon™ graphic boards are compliant with both PC 99 and PC 01 specifications.


 
Q17: What is the recommended system for the Radeon™ 7500 AGP Version?
 
A17: For optimal performance, we recommend an AGP 4X systems (AGP 2.0 compliant) with a Pentium® III, Celeron® II or Athlon® processor. As well, we recommend having at least 64MB of system memory.

Radeon™ 7500 boards will also function in AGP 2X systems (AGP 1.0 compliant), and with Pentium® II, Celeron® I and AMD K6-2 processors. Performance and compatibility may vary based on processor and motherboard. For PCI Version: We also recommend a Pentium® III, Celeron® II, or Athlon processor with an available PCI slot (PCI 2.2 compliant).


 
Q18: Will my new motherboard work with Radeon™ 7500 AGP Version?
 
A18: Radeon™ 7500 AGP complies with AGP 2.0 and PCI 2.2 specifications and should therefore work with most motherboards that also comply to these specs. Many modern motherboards require AGP drivers to be installed in order for AGP to be supported. These drivers are generally shipped with the motherboard. Contact your motherboard supplier for updates.


 
Q19: Which monitors do Radeon™ 7500 graphic boards support?
 
A19: Radeon™ 7500 graphic boards provide support for DDC1/DDC2B+ compliant Plug and Play monitors. As well, this graphic card supports DVI-compliant digital flat panel monitors.


 
Q20: What is the speed of the TMDS transmitter for driving a DVI-I based digital flat panel monitor and what is the maximum resolution?
 
A20: Radeon™ 7500 supports a 165MHz TMDS transmitter and can reach resolutions of up to 1600x1200. DVI resolution and refresh support is dependant upon DDC signals from the monitor. Some resolution and refresh rate restrictions may occur depending upon the signals sent from the monitor.


 
Q21: Does the Radeon™ 7500 support monitors with a 16:9 aspect ratio?
 
A21: Yes, including 1920 x 1080 and 848 x 480 on Windows® 98, Windows® Me, and Windows® 2000. The complete list of resolutions depends on the driver version and operating system. Please note that resolutions are limited by the performance of the attached monitor.


 
Q22: What are the differences between Radeon™ 8500 and Radeon™ 7500?
 
A22: Essentially, the Radeon™ 7500 is a performance and feature enhancement of the award-winning Radeon™ architecture. Charisma Engine™, Pixel Tapestry Architecture™ and HYPER Z™ highlight the 3D performance power of this graphic card. Radeon™ 7500 will provide an over 60% performance boost compared to the original Radeon™ 64MB DDR graphic card. Also added to this product are support for dual displays, digital flat panel monitors, and TV Output.

The Radeon™ 8500 is an entirely new architecture that crowns ATI as the leader in 3D graphic technologies and performance, addressing the needs of the 3D gaming enthusiast.

Q23: Why is VIVO (video input/video output) not included as a feature in Radeon™ 7500?
 
A23: The All-In-Wonder products address the needs of the multimedia enthusiast as this line of products includes support for such features as video capture and TV tuning. The Radeon™ 7500 does however have the ability to output video (TV Out).


 
Q24: Will the Radeon™ 8500 and Radeon™ 7500 boards be available through the Trade-up? If so when and what will the trade-up cost be?
 
A24: ATI has not announced plans to include the Radeon™ 8500 or Radeon™ 7500 in the ATI Trade-Up Program at this time.


 
Q25: To what do the Radeon™ 8500, Radeon™ 7500, Radeon™ 7200, and Radeon™ 7000 names refer?
 
A25: The numbering system was chosen to make it easier for the end user to distinguish between the performance and features of each product. Higher numbers indicate higher performance.


 
Q26: Can use a PCI graphics card, in the same system as my dual display Radeon VE/Radeon 7500/Radeon 8500, to support three or more displays?
 
A26: ATI does not support the use of an additional PCI graphic card in a system with the Radeon VE/Radeon 7500/Radeon 8500. These products do support the use of two independent displays, from a single card, under the Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems.
