Glossary

1.) 3D Comb Filter – a VET that provides sharp video by removing false colors, color bleeding, and unsightly compression artifacts from the image

2.) Analog TV – this is the TV signal that is obtained by attaching a coaxial TV cable to your ATI TV Wonder™. Analog TV gives you standard definition, analog TV channels.

3.) Automatic Color Control – a VET (see Video Enhancement Technology below) that ensures that colors remain true to the actual image

4.) Automatic Gain Control – a VET (see Video Enhancement Technology below) that provides faster brightness adjustments. Especially effective during video scenes that change rapidly between bright and dark scenes.

5.) Built-In DVD Player Software – a DVD-ROM, DVD-R, or DVD-RW drive can be transformed from a simple high-capacity drive to a DVD player with the latest ATI TV Wonder™ products. This will allow you to play all of the DVD movie titles on your PC.

6.) CableCARD™ - A special card that allows you to watch digital cable TV on a Digital Cable Compatible Windows Vista based PC. Your local cable system operator supplies the card, which plugs into the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner.

7.) Clear-QAM Digital TV - this is the Digital signal that is obtained by attaching a coaxial TV cable to your ATI TV Wonder. Clear-QAM technology offers digital TV clarity via digital cable.

8.) Coaxial cable - Coaxial cable, also known as RF cable, is the cable type that carries the signal of various devices such as TVs and VCRs and is the type of cable that connects to the Cable TV jack on the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner.

9.) Digital Cable Tuner - A Digital Cable Tuner is an integrated PC component or USB device that enables you to watch and record, encrypted digital cable channels, as well as other digital cable channels that are not encrypted (sometimes referred to as "ClearQAM"), and over-the-air high definition TV (sometimes referred to as ATSC), and standard TV.

10.) DVD Authoring Software – with a DVD-R or DVD-RW drive, Catalyst Media Center™ software allows you to take your library of recorded TV shows and videos and burn them onto a blank DVD. This software also permits you to create a title for your DVD and choose the appropriate menu and music to accompany your disk.

11.) Edge Enhancement – a VET (see Video Enhancement Technology below) that sharpens video – most prominently around the edges of objects in the video image

12.) Electronic Program Guide (EPG) – an interactive guide that allows you to take a look at current and future television programs. EPGs are especially helpful when you are looking to schedule a recording of a TV program that will occur at a later date.

13.) Over-the-Air HDTV – with an amplified indoor antenna, you will be able to tune and watch high definition free-to-air television programs.

14.) Hardware MPEG-2 – ATI TV Wonder™ 650 and ATI TV Wonder™ 550 are capable of encoding the video utilizing its own hardware capabilities. This relieves the stress on your CPU and ensures a high-quality, full frame video capture.

15.) Home Media Server (MCE HMS) - A term defined by CableLabs as a compliant personal computer running Windows Media Center and incorporates features capable of being used with cable television services received via an OpenCable Unidirectional Receiver, such as the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner. MCE HMS describes a Windows Media Center computer that meets the CableLabs requirements for a Home Media Server (HMS) that is capable of receiving digital cable content when paired with ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner.

16.) MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, WMV9, and H.264 – various video formats and standards. Catalyst Media Center™ is capable of capturing or converting video into any one of these formats. MPEG-2 format is ideal for DVD authoring while H.264 formats are ideal for transferring onto a Personal Video Player such an an ipod Video or Sony PSP.

17.) Noise Reduction – a VET (see Video Enhancement Technology below) that provides a cleaner image by reducing noise or “snow” that can occur during analog video transmissions

18.) OCUR - An OpenCable Unidirectional Receiver (OCUR), such as the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner, is a TV tuner device that uses a CableCARD™ to get conditional access protected broadcast digital content from a cable television provider, and send it out to a Digital Cable Compatible PC.

19.) QAM - Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is the digital cable standard in the United States. Windows Media Center supports QAM signals with ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner in the United States.

20.) RCA Stereo Audio Input – also known as composite audio input, the red and white audio connectors together supply stereo audio from an external source such as a camcorder or VCR.

21.) RCA Video Input – also known as composite video input, this connector permits you to feed an analog video signal from an external source such as a camcorder or VCR.

22.) S-Video Input – a higher quality analog input source than RCA Video Input. This type of connection is supported in some higher-end camcorders and VCRs.

23.) Video Enhancement Technologies (VET) – Those technologies that enhance the quality of the video when watching it live or capturing it onto your hard drive. 3D Comb Filter, Automatic Gain Control, Automatic Color Control, Noise Reduction and Edge Enhancement are all such technologies. These capabilities are only found on high-end consumer television sets or in leading-edge media products such as ATI TV Wonder™ 650 and ATI TV Wonder™ 550.
